This page is in the English edition of 2020年振り返り (and cut some sentences off..)
A work VISA brought me a significant change this year except for Covid-19. I’d worked in a company which was US base. Different timezone made our work difficult to work closely with each other.
Company
Our family relocated to Silicon Valley in the US in the middle of this year since we predicted the pandemic might affect the US this winter and later. We wanted to build our life bases in the US before the period. The decision was correct, unfortunately.
Most of my colleagues work in Silicon Valley or similar time zone, so this relocation changed my work style close to them. Especially I was able to respond to questions without delay. It helped us to work closely and more smoothly.
Another benefit of this relocation was insurances, 401k, and other company supports. The company was US base, so I was not able to get support fully outside the US. (My previous place did not have any branches as well.)
Overall, this year changed my (family) life.
OSS
I have worked on the Appium project continuously. The project is going to 2.0 steady. A yearly update by Xcode brought breaking changes this year, too. But Appium finally dropped a few own implementations to support lower versions or unstable XCTest internals. We hope newer XCTest framework versions will behave reliably more.
Books
The number of books I read was not enough than the previous year since I focused on building our new life. “Qualitative Sozialforschung” was interesting in the read list.
Others
Not so many topics here, but mainly differences to live here than Japan. Everyone here was very kind. We could live here without stress so far 🙂
I hope the year 2021 will be a more brilliant period with decreasing Covid-19 pandemic impact…
